I love the computers from the 80s. Although I didn't live during that time, the limitations, constraints, and simplicity of the machines that existed back then fascinate me. The Apple II, C64, ZX Spectrum - those 8-bit machines. In the 80s, you didn't need a huge team of people to develop software. The limitations pushed the imagination to squeeze the machine to the maximum.
Today, there are almost no limitations, and projects can be of any size. Billions of dollars and hundreds of people are involved in just one project (like GTA 6, for example).
On May 5, 2025, an idea sparked to make something with limitations again. Those 8-bit machines are now just museum pieces. The technology most people use today is the website. Now, a single page can take megabytes. This led me to an idea: create a website with a hard size limit per page: 64KB (mirroring the maximum available memory on the 8-bit machines of the 1980s).
Choosing a domain name, it also needed to be size efficient. The shorter the domain, the less space it takes to link to other pages. Then I came across this domain. A 5€/year domain. This is the shortest cheap domain I could find. I also found one domain with one less character (-1 byte), for 60€/year, but the website name could not be easily guessed. So, 64k was the perfect name.
The .im is a Country Code top-level domain (ccTLD) from the Isle of Man. It is part of the British Isles. It is the shortest possible (there are no 1-character TLDs).
The aim of this website is still not 100% defined, but one goal is to teach how to create a space-efficient webpage. Smaller HTML pages load faster, especially on slow internet connections.
I also love efficiency – squeezing everything possible to get the same outcome.
This website is not meant to have an old school appearance, nor is it designed for compatibility with old web browsers. While it might have some old school appearance, it's not because of compatibility. It's all about efficiency. This website will use the most up-to-date programming techniques and available CSS/JS/HTML components. And yes, I will also use AI to help me. Artificial intelligence is a tool.
